Geometrical and deep learning approaches for instance segmentation of CFRP fiber bundles in textile composites

Segmenting micro-Computed Tomography (µCT) images of textile composites is a necessary step before modeling the material at mesoscale. However, accurate segmentation fiber bundles (or tows) remains challenge in carbon reinforced composites. Segmentation approaches based on local orientation perform well recognizing individual tows only under ideal conditions, namely when bordering two tows’ interface different, or touching area small relative to thickness tow. Unfortunately, many composite laminates used industry, these conditions are not found. Such materials often consist multiple plies, where each aligned one orthogonal directions, and between similar-orientation much larger than tow thickness. Therefore, we propose new methodologies for splitting instances. One geometrical analysis structure using conventional image analysis; other deep learning prediction inputs watershed transform. The learning-based method trained randomly generated synthetic woven material, which avoids an expensive human annotation step.
